Choosing Cabinet Materials & Finishes That Last in Wisconsin Kitchens
Solid wood, plywood, MDF, painted vs. stained — how to pick materials that hold up to Wisconsin humidity and daily life.
Cabinets take more daily abuse than almost anything else in your home. Steam, spills, slammed doors, wet towels, kids leaning on drawer fronts. What they're actually made of, underneath the finish you see, determines whether they still look sharp in fifteen years or start sagging and swelling in three. The box: what's really holding your cabinets together
Every cabinet has two parts: the box (the structure behind the doors) and the doors and drawer fronts (what you actually see and touch). They don't have to be the same material. Understanding the difference helps you spend your budget where it matters most.
For the box, the two common options are plywood and particleboard (or MDF). Plywood is layers of thin wood veneer glued and pressed together. It's the stronger, more moisture-stable choice: it holds screws well, resists sagging under weight, and shrugs off the occasional splash under the sink. Particleboard is wood particles bonded with resin under pressure. It's serviceable and less expensive, but it's noticeably weaker against moisture and heavier hardware loads over time. Screws can strip out of it faster, and if it does absorb water (a slow leak under a sink is the classic culprit), it swells and doesn't recover the way plywood does.

Doors and faces: solid wood, MDF, and veneers
Doors and drawer fronts are a separate decision, and the right material depends on the finish you want.
- Solid wood — the traditional choice for stained cabinetry, since you're showing off real wood grain. It looks great and holds up well, but wood is a natural material that expands and contracts with humidity, so it needs to be built and finished correctly to stay flat and tight over time.
- MDF (medium-density fiberboard) — an engineered panel made of fine wood fibers pressed under heat. It has no grain and no natural movement, which makes it the preferred substrate for a flawless painted finish. No grain telegraphing through the paint, no wood movement causing hairline cracks at panel joints. It's not the right pick for a stained, natural-wood look, since there's no grain to show.
- Veneers — thin slices of real wood applied over a stable substrate like plywood or MDF. Done well, this gives you the look of solid wood with better dimensional stability, especially on larger flat panels.
None of these is universally better. A painted shaker kitchen and a stained white-oak vanity call for different substrates entirely. It's a decision worth walking through with a builder rather than guessing from a showroom sample.
Finishes: painted, stained, natural, and thermofoil
The finish is what you'll actually touch and see every day, and it's where durability and style meet.
Painted finishes give you the widest range of colors and a crisp, clean look that suits modern and classic kitchens alike. A well-applied paint finish on the right substrate (MDF or solid wood, properly primed) holds up to daily wear. Like any painted surface it can chip if struck hard, and touch-ups are more visible than on a stained finish.
Stained finishes let the natural wood grain show through, so every kitchen looks a little different depending on the wood species and grain pattern. Stain plus a durable topcoat is forgiving of minor dings; small marks tend to blend into the grain rather than stand out. It's a favorite for a warmer, more traditional look.
Natural or clear-coat finishes show off the wood with minimal color change, just a protective topcoat. Similar durability to stain, with a more organic, unfussy look.
Thermofoil is a vinyl film heat-fused over an MDF core. It's smooth, consistent, and resists moisture well on the surface, but it's more sensitive to heat (cabinets right next to a range, for example). If it's ever damaged, it can't be sanded and refinished the way painted or stained wood can. The whole door typically needs replacing.
As a broad industry range, material and finish choices can swing the cost of a kitchen project quite a bit — plywood boxes and painted MDF doors sit at a different price point than furniture-grade solid wood with hand-rubbed finishes. Why this matters more in Wisconsin

Are MDF cabinets good quality?
Yes, when used the right way. MDF isn't a lesser material. It's actually the preferred substrate for a smooth, flawless painted door because it has no grain to telegraph through the paint and doesn't move the way solid wood does. What matters is quality: properly sealed edges, good primer, and enough coats of finish. MDF used for cabinet boxes in wet areas without proper sealing is where problems can start, which is why we typically build boxes in plywood and reserve MDF for painted door and drawer fronts.
What holds up best in a humid bathroom?
Plywood boxes with a fully sealed, quality finish are the most forgiving choice for bathroom vanities, since they resist swelling from steam and splashes far better than particleboard. For doors, a well-sealed painted MDF door or a properly finished solid wood door both perform well. What matters most is making sure every surface, including edges and backs, is fully finished so moisture can't get into raw material.
